About Straight-Line Depreciation
Straight-line depreciation is a method that allocates the depreciable cost of an asset evenly over its useful life.
The depreciable amount is the difference between the original cost of the asset and its estimated salvage value.
Example:
Asset Cost = $50,000
Salvage Value = $5,000
Useful Life = 10 years
Annual Depreciation = ($50,000 − $5,000) ÷ 10
Annual Depreciation = $4,500
Asset Cost = $50,000
Salvage Value = $5,000
Useful Life = 10 years
Annual Depreciation = ($50,000 − $5,000) ÷ 10
Annual Depreciation = $4,500
